20 Years Experience as an Educator

Committed to the future of our students in Burke County.

Learn about my vision for education and how we can work together to build a stronger community.

Mark's background

Mark Smith is a Burke County resident, born and raised in the community he now serves. He brings decades of experience in education to his work, having recently retired after 20 years as a professor of art and design. In addition to his time in higher education, he has also taught in public schools. Mark currently works directly with local students and families here in Burke County as a school bus driver and Exceptional Children’s monitor.

Through these roles, he has seen firsthand what our kids face every day—both in and out of the classroom. He’s built relationships with students across the county and understands that every child learns differently, and every child deserves a chance to develop their abilities so they can successfully thrive and grow.

Why I'm running

I am running for the Board of Education in Burke County, North Carolina, with a clear mission: to raise awareness of my stance on current educational issues and to articulate my goals for the future of our students.

I believe every student in Burke County deserves access to the best possible education. My candidacy is rooted in a deep commitment to fostering an environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Your children's education is our community's future so students need to be instructed on how to foster the tools for their own well-being and life-goals.  Let's build a brighter future for Burke County education together.

My platform

Curriculum development

Ensuring our curriculum is rigorous, relevant, and prepares students for future success in a rapidly changing world.

Teacher support

Advocating for better resources, professional development, and competitive compensation to attract and retain top educators.

Parental involvement

Fostering stronger partnerships between schools and families to create a supportive learning ecosystem.

Student well-being

Prioritizing mental health services, safe school environments, and programs that promote holistic student development.

Fiscal responsibility

Ensuring that tax dollars are spent efficiently and effectively to maximize educational outcomes for all students.

Technology integration

Strategically incorporating technology to enhance learning, provide equitable access, and prepare students for digital literacy.

Community engagement

Building stronger ties with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders to enrich educational opportunities.

Accountability

Establishing clear metrics and transparent reporting to ensure schools are meeting high standards of performance.

Goals for our students

Put Students First—Every Time

Decisions should be based on what’s best for students, not convenience or politics.

Academic Excellence

To ensure all students achieve their highest academic potential through challenging and supportive learning environments.

College and Career readiness

To equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in post-secondary education or their chosen career paths. Vocational education is just as essential because it bridges the gap between occupational training and real-world employment.

Critical Thinking and Problem-solving

To develop students' abilities to analyze information, think creatively, and solve complex problems effectively.

Civic Engagement

To inspire students to become active, informed, and responsible citizens within their community and beyond.

My vision

Protect Safe, Supportive Learning Environments

Hallyburton Academy serves some of our most vulnerable students. Closing it and placing those students into already stretched schools—while citing lack of funding—raises serious concerns about safety, support, and priorities.

Inclusive learning environments

Creating schools where every student feels valued, respected, and supported in their learning journey.

Innovation in Education

Embracing new teaching methods and technologies to make learning engaging and effective for all. AI is a tool, but we must be wary of the implications and repercussions.

Sustainable Growth

Planning for the long-term success and adaptability of our school system to meet future challenges.

Support Teachers and School Staff

Teachers and staff are being asked to do more with less. They deserve leadership that listens, respects their experience, and provides real support.
